Where The Dark Stands Still

A New York Times bestseller

A girl with dangerous magic makes a risky bargain with a demon to be free of her monstrous power in this “dark, devastating, and gothic” (Kirkus Reviews) young adult fantasy perfect for fans of An Enchantment of Ravens and House of Salt and Sorrows.

Liska knows that magic is monstrous, and its practitioners are monsters. She has done everything possible to suppress her own magic, to disastrous consequences. Desperate to be free of it, Liska flees her small village and delves into the dangerous, demon-inhabited spirit-wood to steal a mythical fern flower. If she plucks it, she can use its one wish to banish her powers. Everyone who has sought the fern flower has fallen prey to unknown horrors, so when Liska is caught by the demon warden of the wood—called The Leszy—a bargain seems better than death: one year of servitude in exchange for the fern flower and its wish.

Whisked away to The Leszy’s crumbling manor, Liska soon makes an unsettling discovery: she is not the first person to strike this bargain, and all her predecessors have mysteriously vanished. If Liska wants to survive the year and return home, she must unravel her taciturn host’s spool of secrets and face the ghosts—figurative and literal—of his past. Because something wakes in the woods, something deadly and without mercy. It frightens even The Leszy…and cannot be defeated unless Liska embraces the monster she’s always feared becoming.

Like Liska, you may find familiarity in the struggle against suppressed impulses and the fear of what your true self might reveal. The narrative instills a profound message: to embrace your darkness is to move toward freedom. Not like traditional fairy tales, where magic is an unqualified blessing, here magic represents a burden that must be understood and accepted.

The character of The Leszy embodies the complex layers that come with guardianship and the secrets of the past, illustrating that those we meet may also have hidden depths and stories that shape their intentions. Such interactions serve as a reminder that trust, though risky, can yield invaluable connections that enrich your life.

Alluring yet foreboding, the spirit-wood symbolizes the untamed nature of our desires and fears. The mythical fern flower represents that elusive wish many chase to escape their struggles, yet it is clear that true growth is rooted in accepting oneself, flaws and all. You get the sense that every obstacle Liska faces is not merely physical but also a reflection of her internal battle.

Ultimately, the book resonates with a fundamental life lesson: salvation may not come from external resolutions but rather from within. By fully embracing your complexity, you pave the way to self-acceptance and liberation. As you reflect on Liska’s journey, consider how your own choices define your narrative. Confront your own woods, your own demons, and remember, sometimes the darkest paths lead to the most illuminating truths. As you follow Liska’s journey, you will undoubtedly feel the weight of her desperation and fear. Like many, you might find yourself suppressing certain parts of your nature, fearing they make you a monster. This tale reveals the harsh truth that trying to renounce these aspects often leads to disaster. For Liska, her journey into the dangerous spirit-wood is not merely a quest for a magical solution but a confrontation with herself and her own hidden powers.

Through Liska’s journey, you learn that embracing your inner turmoil is essential. Not only does she have to negotiate her bond with The Leszy, but she must also navigate the ghosts of those who came before her—individuals who, like her, attempted to escape only to confront their own shadows. The lesson here emphasizes that true strength comes from acceptance, not denial.

You may reflect on the theme of bargains made with darkness and the price you pay for such exchanges. The narrative underscores that while seeking quick solutions might be enticing, the consequences can be dire. It is crucial to understand that only by embracing your complexities and taking control of your fate can you overcome the very monsters you fear.
